The Mind-Body Connection

Science has repeatedly proven that the mind and body are connected. Physical ailments and injuries can affect how the mind perceives and responds to stress, situations, and relationships. For example, some people become very irritable when they’re in physical pain. Likewise, when people are feeling stressed, anxious, or sad, it can affect how their body functions, causing physiological changes that can make emotional distress even worse. For example, some people stop eating or engage in bad habits when they become sad.

Therefore, addressing psychological and emotional issues can actually reduce one’s physiological response to pain. This is done via a multitude of psychological treatments that help patients gain insight and learn specific skills (e.g., cognitive-behavioral strategies, meditation, guided imagery, relaxation training) to better manage both their emotional symptoms and pain conditions.
